Lima,
...(coming from) On the north side of the plaza is the GovernmentPalace, built on the site of Pizarro’s palace, where he was assassinate in 1541. Turnright along Jirón Ancash and you will come to the San Francisco Monastery, the jewel of colonial Lima. Even if you are not a fan of colonial churches, don’t miss this one. There are numerous other colonial churches such asthe Santo Domingo Monastery, Las Nazarenas, la Merced, etc. The city center contains several fine examples of secular colonial architecture. Outstanding is one on Jirón Ucayali, close to San Pedro: the Torre Tagle PalaceThe house was completed in 1735 and gives a good idea of the opulence of Lima in its colonial prime; it now houses the Foreign Ministry. The colonnaded Plaza San Martin, recently restored and repainted and brightly lit, is an important gathering place for political meetings. There are several museums in Lima such as the Museo de la Nación,which hold a wonderfulcollection of artifacts from the Chavín culture, woven articles found at Paracas and ceramics from Nazca, among other things, making it one of the best museums in the city. The one museum everyone wants to see is the Gold Museum, it holds a huge private collection of gold, silver and bejeweled articles, some of which are quite breath taking. The next stop on the museum tour is at the Museum of Anthropology, Archeology and History inPlaza Bolivar in the suburb of Pueblo Libre. Although some of the exhibits have been moved to the new Museo de la Nación, it is still one of the most interesting museums in the country, with a superb collection of pottery and textiles from all the main cultures of ancient Peru. Close by on Avenida Bolivar is the Museo RafaelLarco Herrera which has a vast collection of pre-Columbian ceramics, gold and silver objects. A small annex holds a fascinating collection of erotic pottery from the Moche period. |
